The Director of Perioperative Services directs, supervises, coordinates, plans, and evaluates department functions and activities to provide cost-effective care of high quality according to the standards set throughout Alameda Health System.
The director assumes total system wide responsibility for overall operations of Surgery, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Same Day Surgery (SDS), Anesthesia, Pre-op, Sterile Processing, and the Perioperative Business Office.
Functions include organization, planning, and supervising to insure the delivery of safe effective nursing care.
Other functions include strategic business unit growth, budgeting, staff development, physician engagement, and optimization of Perioperative Services.
Consults with and advises the Vice President of Patient Care Services, Chief Administrative Officer and the Chairs of Surgery and Anesthesia on activities related to clinical operations, quality improvement and risk management activities of the unit; implements changes in policy, programs and physical resources required to achieve hospital objectives.
Ensures compliance with regulatory and governing agencies and established hospital standards, practice and procedures.
Develops tactical strategies working cooperatively with Medical Staff in pursuit of quality of care, financial and operational objectives.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Oversees management of Perioperative Services operationally and fiscally.
Creates and conveys the operational and fiscal goals of Perioperative Services with the assistance of the management team.
Evaluates clinical nursing practice to ensure that personnel provide safe and effective patient centered care in Perioperative Services.
Evaluates and selects educational resources to ensure clinical competence with regulatory standards, AHS policies and procedures, and departmental policies and procedures.
Collects and analyzes data related to quality and safety to inform performance improvement initiatives and staff education.
Evaluates Perioperative Services personnel performance annually.
Ensures that Perioperative Services has sufficient orientation program/process for all new and/or contract staff.
Serves as co-chair for Perioperative Services Operations Committee.
Serves as a member of the AHS Value Analysis Team (VAT).
Ensures department compliance with GPO for supply chain management and cost containment.
Collaborates with departmental shared governance councils to inform and improve departmental practice, employee engagement opportunities, staffing, patient acuity systems.
Evaluates and analyzes risk data to identify trends or opportunities for improvement.
Investigates, evaluates, and recommends problem-solving methodologies where outcomes would necessitate corrective actions.
Oversees collaboration with the quality department on CALNOC/NDNQI data collection evaluation and dissemination related to Perioperative Services.
Oversees management and activities related to supply chain and equipment contracts and vendors/sales representatives.
Ensures Perioperative Services is in a state of continuous survey readiness.
Oversees patient care-related information technology activities.
Responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluation of patient care delivery systems.
Other duties as assigned.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
MINIMUM
Qualifications:
Required Licenses/Certifications:
Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California; BLS - Basic Life Support Certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Required Education:
Graduate of an accredited Nursing program required; Master's degree in Nursing, Health Administration, Business or Public Health Management required.
Required
Experience:
Five years of recent progressive management and quality management experience within a clinical/specialty area as a director or higher position.
Preferred
Experience:
Recent experience at a Trauma Center or Teaching Hospital.
